Turning Green Into Green

Turning Green Into Green

History may be an imprecise guide to the future, but as the Venezuelan economist Carlota Perez has famously pointed out, transformation has proceeded almost like clockwork in the technological realm, with another great leap occurring every 50 years or so. By Steven Milunovich's count, that means we're now in about year five of what he refers to as the clean-technology revolution. "Investors have historically received the best returns during the first 10 to 20 years," says Milunovich, an Alternative Energy Analyst with BofA Merrill Lynch Global Research.1 "It's still relatively early, but we think it's time to be paying attention."

Observant investors will find an expanding universe of clean-tech companies trying to address questions of how to curb global warming and reduce dependence on unpredictable oil-producing regions.

The Bond That Loves Inflation

The Bond That Loves Inflation

Even a relatively minor jump in prices can take a major bite out of the income from the conservative yields of U.S. Treasury bonds, the foundation of so many investor portfolios. But the income and long-term return from one type of Treasury, called Treasury inflation-protected securities, or TIPS, actually improves as the consumer price index rises.

Last year, when the federal government poured money into the economy and inflation fears swirled, TIPS became a focus for investors looking for a hedge against rising consumer prices. As a result, yields on these securities were driven down to low levels — and particularly as worries about inflation subsided, TIPS began to appear less attractive.
